Frequently Asked Questions What is respite?
Respite care has often been defined as the relief provided to the parent/ family/ guardian of a child with a disability or chronic illness, for a specific period of time. The main function of respite care is to provide the child with a positive and rewarding experience while at the same time providing the primary care giver with a break from the care and supervision of their child.
Does my family/child qualify for this program?
Any family living in the Halifax Regional Municipality or Elmsdale-Corridor area, who is caring for a child, under the age of 19, with special needs can receive support services through the Central Region Respite Society (CRRS).
What is an "independent" respite care provider?
The term "independent" respite care provider is used to clarify a respite care provider's employment status. Respite care providers, in the referral service provided by the Central Region Respite Society, own and operate a private respite business. The business is a "sole proprietorship" where the respite care provider offers their personal support services to a family and their child.
Who pays the respite care provider?
The families pay the respite care providers. Most of the families that access support services through the Central Region Respite Society receive financial support from the In-Home Support Program for Children with the Department of Community Services. Families then in turn use this money pay their respite care providers directly themselves.
Does my family/child qualify for the In-Home Support for Children Program?
The In-Home Support for Children Program considers many factors when they assess the eligibility of a family and their child. Since each assessment is done on an individual basis it would be difficult to determine whether or not any particular family qualifies for the program from basic information posted on a web site. We recommend contacting the IHSP and requesting a home visit. Their contact number for general inquiries is 424-6111.
